TheDenham Foreshore underwent a major transformation in 2016 and now includesgrassed areas, picnic shelters, BBQs, a swimming pontoon, interpretivedisplays, toilets, plus a massive nautical themed playground.
The foreshore playground is hard to miss as you drivedown the main street of Denham. It has become a major focal point ofthe small seaside town, and is definitely worth a visit (or two or three).During our family holiday we were in the habit of walking down to the foreshorein the afternoon and letting the kids have a play before picking up some dinnerat one of the nearby restaurants. The sunsets were amazing but it was alwaystoo windy to have a picnic dinner.
The playground has been built from locally sourcedlimestone and recycled wood from the old jetty, which gives the playground avery unique and rustic look.
On one side of the playground which lookslike the front/back of a boat, there is a large net structure with a rock andrope climbing wall. My 4 year old and 6 year old found the rock wallparticularly challenging, but by the end of our holiday they had mastered it,and could climb to the top without any help.
In the middle of the playground between some largepalm trees are lots of different musical instruments, all which looked likethey have been made from recycled materials.
The eye-catching part of the playground is the largelimestone turret with a giant green covered slide. There are a few differentlevels of climbing to complete to get to the top of the turret, which thengives you access to the slide. The kids had a lot of fun going up and down,over and over again.
At the other end of the playground, which again lookslike the front/back of a boat, is a smaller slide with a few differentsand-play equipment features. This part was a particular favourite for my toddler whocould easily get up to the slide by himself.
The playground is mostly shaded by shadesails and trees, and is fenced off from the road. Thebeach is right next to the playground and is protected by a small wall, so itis nice and calm, perfect for not so confident swimmers and little ones. There is also a pontoon to swimout to with some diving blocks to jump off from.
In close vicinity of the playground aretoilets, barbeques, two jetties, fish cleaning station, grassed area and somenautical statues. There are also a few picnic shelters, which are almost fullyenclosed to try to reduce the effect of the wind and the sun.
Across the road from the playground is the Shark Bayvisitor centre, newsagency and small café. The new facilities at the Denham foreshorehave made a massive improvement to the area. If you haven’t visited before orit’s been a while since your last visit, I recommend making time to check itout next time you’re in the Gascoyne region.
