The Charles Riley Reserve North Beach has had a massive makeover with a big new playground with flying fox, and the refurbishment of the RSL war memorial including the relocation and preservation of the historic lone pine.
This reserve is home to the Charles Riley RSL War Memorial and now also the “Lone Pine”. The battle of Lone Pine during World War 1 took place on a hill void of trees with the exception of one solitary pine tree.
In commemoration of this battle, a pine tree was planted at the Australian War Memorial and is believed to have come from a seed from Lone Pine ridge in Gallipoli and became known as the ‘Lone Pine’. Seeds from this tree have been used to grow many other trees across the country including in the Charles Riley Memorial Reserve.
So this is more than just a great playground – this reserve holds lots of historical significance and was a popular location this year for the ANZAC dawn service this year.
The new playground features a big double cable flying fox – that includes one cable with a seat & harness for disabled use (there is a disabled access ramp to the flying fox also), and is great for younger ones also wanting to have a go on the flying fox.
The playground also features this great sand play feature. Kids can use buckets and chains to fill and lift sand, and the conveyor to move the sand along too – great fun for little ones and big kids alike.
The main play structure is more suited to older children, with ladder access to the top and the slide
There is also this cool sound sensory play feature which is also fun to climb
And a few different individual bouncy and swinging play features around the playground like this one – and some colourful smaller rocker type play features for the little ones.
And of course there are traditional swings as well as a birds nest swing too
How to Get There:
Lastly there is everything you need here to spend the day away with family and friends or to hold a special family gathering of kids birthday party. There are toilets just as short walk away at the clubrooms near the oval, BBQs, picnic tables, and Farmer Jacks is just down the road.
In summer you may like to enjoy a swim at the beach then take the 5 min walk from the beach to Charles Riley Reserve for a play and a BBQ.
