The new 2015 release of Disney’s Cinderella (PG) is not far removed from the traditional Cinderella story, so don’t expect any twists or turns to deepen the plot of this well known fairy tale.
The start was a little slow with the story of how Ella (Cinderella was the name given to her by her horrible step sisters) lost both her parents, and how she became step-daughter turned house slave to her Step-Mother (played by Cate Blanchett) and her two horrible daughters.
The princess action starts when Cinderella’s (played by Lily James) horrible Step-Mother, forbids her to go to the ball – queue Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother (played by Helena Bonham Carter) who is hilarious and looks and sounds like she has just come off the set of an episode of Real Housewives.
Cinderella of course looks absolutely beautiful in a bright blue ball gown and her glass slippers – and her Prince (played by Richard Madden) known only to Cinderella as Kit the Apprentice after their chance encounter in the woods, is drawn straight to her.
Once she makes her way to the ball they enjoy a few scenes together before the stroke of midnight approaches and there is a dramatic scene as she races to reach the gates before the spell wears off, but not before capturing and changing the heart of the Princesses father and gaining his approval in the same short moment it took for the Prince to fall in love with Ella in their chance meeting in the woods.
Cinderella is delightful and will be enjoyed by any young princess at heart. We recommend this movie for older girls (and boys of course who want to go along an watch it) but it probably won’t hold the interest of younger children. We recommend it for kids ~8yrs+.
There are a few laughs along the way so it’s an enjoyable movie for parents and a great movie for the ladies to watch with a girlfriend.
The horrible Step-Mother does in parts of the movie slap her daughters and tell them to “shut up” and there are strong bullying themes. The women show lots of cleavage also as were the dresses of the times, so it’s for these reasons also that it’s probably not suitable for younger children.
