John Tonkin Park East Fremantle Features: Playground | Toddler Playground | Toilets | Cafe | BBQs | Picnic Shelters | River Swimming Spot | Walk / Cycle Path
John Tonkin Park East Fremantle is located down from the Stirling Hwy bridge in a beautiful quiet location just across from the Leeuwin Barracks and it has everything you need for a morning, afternoon or day out with the kids.
When you arrive there is plenty of parking, but it’s not all free. You’ll see the Zephyr Cafe sign this is where the free parking is. There is also free parking on the other side of the playground. Both of these carparks give you good access to the playground. The playground is boat shaped and features lots of slides and ramps and kids will love looking through the telescope out to all the boats driving past. There is also a great little toddler playground here for the younger ones a bit closer to the cafe.
Take some spare clothes along and a towel as this is also a beautiful spot for a splash in the river. The white sandy beach extends from in front of the cafe and stretches along in front of the playground (it’s fenced off in front of the playground area). If you have a dog there is a dog exercise beach here too, just a little bit down from the playground.
Just note there are no showers or water fountains here so make you bring along plenty of spare clothes and towels if you plan to have splash here. Being close to the ocean inlet the water is beautiful and blue, so it’s pretty hard to resist a swim on a hot day.
You’ll also love this beautiful master with her dog art sculpture here. The kids can climb all over it and you can get some great photos.
After all that playing and splashing in the river you can enjoy a picnic or bbq, there are plenty of bbqs and picnic tables near the playground – or head to Zephyr Cafe , it’s open daily for breakfast, lunch or a late lunch/early dinner. Just note: dogs are not permitted in the outdoor dining area.
There are a great range of cakes, coffees and light meals and you can eat indoors or outdoors overlooking the river, its a simply stunning spot for a meal or a coffee and cake! Or maybe you could just grab an icecream for the kids to coax them home, because trust me they won’t want to leave.
If you still have some energy after all that and want to work off that lunch or cake, there is a path way / cycle way right the way along the rivers edge.
