Take a trip back in time and enjoy dining at what feels and looks just like Grandma’s old place at Mid-Century Cafe & Collectables Yokine. From egg beater clocks to black and white tvs with rabbit ears on top – you will be flooded with childhood memories as you enjoy a vintage inspired, yet contrasting modern day menu combined with good old fashioned service.
This unique cafe was inspired by owners, Jill and Ray’s love for the mid centry era. When they saw that the old Charlie Carters Yokine site had become available they decided to make their dream a reality. The history of the space and the layout allowed for them to re-create homely scenes that appear to have been taken directly from the mid century era. They have created a truly unique and authentic mid-century home setting, with all items collected personally by them – perfect for it’s diners to enjoy a sense of nostalgia combined with old fashioned service.
You will spend ages taking in the specific details of each of the re-created home areas. The burnt orange couches, bold wall paper, floral carpets, glass display cabinets and huge array of retro ornaments and decoratives. Some of what you see you can actually buy too, so you can take with you a little something to give your home a bit of a retro touch.
It’s not just the decor and little decorative touches that make this experience. You can browse vintage magazines and books including cook books and home decorating books.
While the decor is strikingly retro the menu has a vintage feel but is very much on point with today’s food trends, with pulled pork, cronuts and extreme milkshakes featuring. Gluten free options are also available. We visited for brunch and I enjoyed a turkish tandori chicken burger and an iced coffee. There are lots of savoury and sweet items in the display cabinet to choose from.. The dining areas have plenty of room for prams, wheelchairs or nanna’s zimmer frame.
While they don’t have a kids menu there are plenty of options on the menu and from the display cabinet that kids will enjoy (just note they don’t do hot chips). Babycino’s are just a $1 and high chairs are available. The kids will love the little kids play area with role play kitchen, chalkboard, toys and puzzles.
Enjoy some good old quality family time with an assortment of board games and puzzles to entertain both kids and adults.
Behind the cafe is a small playground so you can enjoy a run around after your coffee or meal.
