The SensAtion Gallery has arrived in EastPerth with a unique multi-room and multi-sensory experience that the wholefamily can enjoy. There are 20 individual exhibits spread out over 5 differentrooms, which have been designed and related to experience each of yourdifferent senses: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch.
The first place to start is at the ticket office, which is on the corner of Hay St and De Vlamingh Ave, East Perth. You’ll be given a wristband which allows you access to all of the 5 exhibition rooms. You can explore everything at your own pace and order, spending as long or as little as you like at each spot. The 5 rooms run down the length of De Vlamingh Ave, and you are free to come and go as you please.
We started off in Room 1 which has a wall of art that interacts with a free downloadable phone app. Mr 3 enjoyed pointing my phone at each piece of artwork and discovering the hidden animation. He thought it was a bit magical! This room also featured a neon sign wall and a “save the turtles” set up. Mr 3 also had a few games on the retro arcade games that were there (free to use).
Room 2 was by far the favourite of the day forMr 3, with a giant ball pit filled with beautiful blue, green and white balls,and a few large inflatables. It was pretty hard to drag him away from here, andwe ended up coming back 3(!!) times so he could have another go at swimmingthrough the balls.
The next room, Room 3, gave us the opportunityto take a moment to lay back and relax (well as much as you can with a 3 yearold) with several different sized hammocks around the room. There were alsoheadphones streaming relaxation music, to be used while laying back in thehammocks.
Another favourite was Room 5, with a silentdisco set up. Mr 3 boogied away for a good 10 minutes and loved watching thefloor light up with his movement. The room also featured a play kitchen, anopportunity to apply some glitter makeup and a few other art installations.
A few of the installations are geared towardsgetting that perfect Insta-worthy photo and have ring lights and phone holderssetup to aid you.
All in all, we had a fun morning out and endedup spending 2 hours exploring the SensAtion Gallery.
At $20 entry per adult, $10 for kids, and kidsunder 5 free – this is a fairly affordable and different way to spend a coupleof hours out with the kids. Just the amount of fun and time Mr 3 spent in theball pit was worth it alone.
Quite a few of the rooms were decorated withfairy lights, which I think would make it extra special to visit at night timeand add an extra layer to the sensory experience. Info about night sessions canbe found at the website below.
Some additional tips:
- Room 2 has the ball pit, and ifyou want to see the rest of the exhibit, I would visit it last. It was verydifficult for me to drag away Mr 3 from the ball pit to go and explore theother rooms;
- Download the app EyeJack beforegoing and have your phone fully charged for all the photos you’ll be taking andto make use of the app. I did see phone chargers available in Room 1 if you dohappen to run out of battery;
- The Point Fraser CPP carpark is ashort 5 minute walk away from the SensAtion Gallery, and the first hour is freeand $2.50 per hour thereafter.
Sensation Gallery runs Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm until 22nd December 2019 – Extended from 7th – 25th January 2020, with evening sessions on the 6th, 13th & 20th December also. See website (link below) for session information.
