Dixon Reserve Playground is a nature based playground that features forts, tunnels, an obstacle course and lots more play features for both big kids and little ones.
The playground is almost split into two sections with a large fort and one end and a small for at the other end. The large, tall fort has been built around an existing tree which makes for beautiful natural shade in this area of the playground.
There are steps leading up to the large fort our you can choose one of the more challenging ways to get up or down. There is a cargo net, fireman’s pole or a narrow log post you can climb using a rope to pull yourself up.
Leading up to the large fort is a wooden obstacle course that starts near the smaller fort and features lots of wood and rope combination challenges. My boys loved trying to get from one end to the other without touching the ground. The obstacles are suitable for little ones and big kids. A little assistance may be need from parents of younger ones to get them up onto the monkey bars etc.
The smaller fort has rock climb entry with a wide concrete slide down.
On the other side of the slide is a water pump. The water from the pump cascades down the rock face in a series of reservoirs with dams that can be closed at each to build up the water. This was very popular with the little ones who had empty milk bottles and containers to fill with water to add with the fun. Spare clothes or a towel are a must for this playground.
Underneath the small fort is a tunnel, also popular with the little ones. There is also a large basket swing and small spinning climbing frame near the small fort.
There are no toilets at Dixon Reserve Playground (you may be able to use the Cockburn Basketball Stadium toilets if it’s open), however there are picnic shelters and a BBQ. There are also football goals, half court basketball and a small bike pump track on the reserve. If your kids want to bring their scooters along there is one footpath that runs along the outside of the playground. Coffee is available nearby at the Kerry Street Pear Tree .
