The Herdsman Wildlife Centre is a great place to visit after school or on a rainy day – or any other day really the kids will love it! Signage requests a gold coin donation on entry, however aside from this the Herdsman Wildlife Centre is free.
There are lots of fun, educational interactive displays . My son especially loved the touch tables and the game where you have to press the buttons to match the bird to the name. They also have some great little boxes with clues on top and kids have to guess what’s inside!
There are lots of beautiful aquariums to look at with all sorts of creatures, like frogs, gilgies, marron and much more – my favourite was the long neck turtle. Upstairs is a viewing platform with posters of all the different birds that can be found in the lake area. There weren’t any binoculars there when we went as indicated, so make sure you take your own along. This is great for even the littlest kids they have boxes for them to stand on so they can see out. This section is up a small flight of stairs so no disabled or pram access to this area.
Outside the centre you would be forgiven for thinking you were in the hills or deep in the bush somewhere. The surrounds are just beautiful and there is a big verandah all the way around so you can walk to the back and look at the lake from outside – great for those rainy days.
There are also limestone walking tracks in both directions from the centre if you fancy a bit of a walk around the lake. The track to the right (if you are facing the centre) takes you on a 500m walk across a boardwalk over the lake.
The Herdsman Wildlife Centre is definitely worth a visit – it wont fill up your whole day but is great if the kids are bored and you want to fill in an hour or so.

What to bring? Bring a set of binoculars so your kids can spot the birds on the posters or get a closer look when walking around the grounds or taking in one of the walks around the lake. If it’s raining bring an umbrella, raincoat and gumboots and enjoy a nature walk.
