Dreamworks “Home” starts straight out the gate with a breed of aliens called the “Boov” invading earth and taking humans from their homes and taking over planet Earth under instruction from the Boov “Captain Fleck” who has told the Boov, humans are inferior and that it’s Boov’s duty to teach them to be better . The alien takeover is narrated by alien “Oh” (unmistakenly voice by Jim Parsons AKA Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory)
Not long into the movie we meet Tip (voiced by Rhianna), a human girl who has seen the Boovs taking over earth from her window – its not clear until a bit further on in the movie as to why she wasn’t taken like all the other humans.
Tip is determined to find her mother (voiced by J.Lo), and while a series of events sees Oh become a fugitive Boov , Tip runs to find her mother while hiding from the Boov, Oh is also fleeing from his fellow Boov and and that’s when Oh & Tip’s world collide.
Deciding they can help each other Oh and Tip set out to find Tips “My Mom” and along the way they realise that they have a lot in common, mostly that they are both a bit different and have been bullied by their fellow humans and aliens most of their lives.
While the Boov change her planet, Tip works on changing Oh’s world – she teaches him about the true meaning of home and family – and I must admit while I thought Home would be a fun light hearted movie (which it was mostly), the emotional connection that forms between Tip & Oh is seriously intense, and will no doubt have you in tears at the end.
Rest assured the movie does have a happy ending, but there is a scene towards the end that had a few children gasping in shock, followed by an eery silence across the cinema – you may just need to give you kids a little cuddle during this moment.
Home teaches us that it’s important to open our minds to things that are different and not just believe what we have been told all our lives – and that making mistakes is just part of life and it’s how we best learn and find out way.
My boys 4 & 1/2yrs & 8yrs both adored this movie – as did I. It’s very funny, with an emotional rollercoaster at the end. There is one character that is a little bit scary but even he in the end we find out is just a big softie inside. It’s a great movie for the whole family to enjoy. LOVED IT!
