I was invited along to Jesters Flat Margaret River to watch my 10 year old niece and her friend enjoy their first horse riding experience. I have to admit thinking back on the horse riding experiences from my youth I expected to visit a smelly, dirty and sandy stable – but when we arrived at Jesters Flat I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful this equestrian farm and vineyard was.

On arrival we wandered into a stunning homestead setting, with an original homestead complete with old furniture and antiques, roaring outdoor fire, a huge elevated tree house with sand pit beneath and table and chair settings across an area of green grass with fairy lights hanging overhead.

We weren’t sure how long it would take to get there, so we were approximately 30 mins early, which was plenty of time for the girls to check out the treehouse and choose their helmet, boots and gloves before being introduced to their horse for the tour.

The homestead area is right alongside the covered arena where riders are helped onto their horse and receive some instruction on the basics of horse riding required for their tour (approx. 20mins). As non-riders we were able to stand alongside the arena and watch the kids get on their horeses, then enjoyed sitting on the log by the fire while the girls went off for their ride. If you have younger children not riding they will enjoy playing in the treehouse, cubby house, sand pit and on the tree tyre swing too.

Self serve tea, coffee and milo is available in the homestead, as well as marshmallows that you might like to roast by the fire.

They were gone just over an hour and enjoyed a walk through the forest and bushland that included a short session of trotting as well. The girls were both beginners and thoroughly enjoyed their ride and had certainly bonded with their horses Michael and Sausage by the time they got back.

When the girls returned and got off their horses some refreshments were brought out for everyone to enjoy. This included Turkish bread with olive oil and dukkah to dip it in, Jesters Flat wine for the grown ups and soft drink for the kids. It was so lovely enjoying a sip of wine in this beautiful part of Margaret River. If you want to grab some wine to take home you can purchase wine from the Jesters Flat cellar door – or if you would just like to pop in for some tastings, the cellar door is open daily (except Thursday) 10-4pm.

If you’d like to make more of a weekend of it, you can enjoy one of their Camp Out packages. Your glamping set up at Jesters Flat is all taken care of and you can enjoy a real equestrian farm stay experience. This is perfect for those who are looking for a horse riding getaway – just book the horse rides (horse riding additional to accommodation costs) you want to enjoy during your stay.

A horse riding tour with Jesters Flat is so much more thanjust a ride, it’s a whole Margaret River experience from the stunning back dropto the wine and bread at the end while you mingle with the Jesters Flat staff. Whether you are riding or not you will love this special equestrian farmexperience. 1 hour tours start from $55 per person.
