Lexi’s On Rotto is a caravan serving yummy food and drinks located on the West End at Rottnest Island. Riding to the West End of Rottnest Island has always been a popular thing to do while at Rottnest Island with so many beautiful bays, sights to explore and wildlife to see including New Zealand fur seals, dolphins or migrating whales (subject to weather and seasons). Now there is even more reason to visit the West End with the incentive of a delicious toastie sandwich and a hot coffee to reward your bike riding efforts.
Riding to the West End can be done in around an hour but depends on how many bays and viewing stops you make along the way and of course whether your kids need to stop for some breaks. My 10 year old needed to stop several times and we walked a few of the hills so it probably took us just over an hour and half.
We were pretty relieved coming over the hill and seeing the Lexi’s On Rotto Caravan, deck chairs and all the people gathering here. It’s a challenging ride for young ones but the scenery along the way is just spectacular and very much worth it.
The Lexi’s On Rotto Caravan is well equipped to make you a range of snacks and drinks including coffee, milkshakes and toasted sandwiches and has a small range of treats including icy poles and soft drinks. There are several deck chairs and a couple of picnic tables located alongside the caravan as well as temporary toilets too.
Lexi’s On Rotto is open daily from 10am – 3pm (check before you go as open times may be subject to weather and seasons). Of course it was first things first when we got there…. a well earned rest of the legs on the deck chairs and an ice cold icy pole straight up!
Lexi’s on Rotto is owned by Frankie’s On Rotto which is located in the Settlement and also has a sister caravan cafe Kalli’s On Rotto at the Wadjemup Lighthouse.
There’s lots to do and see at West End with New Zealand fur seals and dolphins known to frequent the Cathedral Rocks area, where there is a viewing platform and fixed binoculars. You may spot migrating whales here during the migration season too.
The Cape Vlamingh Heritage Trail is also located on the most western point and can be completed in around 30 mins with both quokkas and dolphins commonly spotted here.
We visited in October 2020 and there was lots of construction work going on for the West End Enhancement project which will include a bus transfer station, new ablutions, shelters and seating, artworks, paths and viewing platforms. The ablution works are expected to be completed in November 2020, landscaping by December 2020 and artwork installations by April 2021. The West End is certainly not the baron island destination it used to be and is definitely worth a visit if you are holidaying or visiting the island for the day.
If you do have young ones in tow and would like to visit the West End of the island but are concerned about whether they can ride the whole distance, there are a few options.
- If you hire your bike, check with who you hired from if they have a bike & bus deal which you can add to your hire. This allows you to leave your hire bike at the bus top for them to collect and you can catch the bus back to the Settlement
- You can also hire or bring along your own child carriers
- The other option is to get yourself an all day Hop On and Hop Off Island Discovery Bus Day Tour Pass. This way you can explore all the popular bays on the island, spend some time at the West End and perhaps walk in between a few of the bays before hopping back on the bus
It takes around the same time to make your way back to the Settlement so it is a big day of riding and one you certainly need to prepare yourself for with plenty of water and a plan as to how you are going navigate the island.
If you are planning a visit to Rottnest we highly recommend you put some time aside to visit the West End of Rottnest Island and in particular enjoy a coffee and a treat while taking in the magnificent views of the West End while you are there.
