The Oliver Hill Guns and Tunnel Tour can be booked from the Rottnest Island Visitors Centre or purchased at Oliver Hill. You can either include the train ride to Oliver Hill in your tour or make your own way there by bike to join the tour.
My 6yo son and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The tour inlcudes a train ride up to Oliver Hill, then a 1 hour guided tour through the tunnels to see how the Oliver Hill guns were armed, maintained and operated during World War II. We took the train ride up to Oliver Hill – it’s a great way to see the south side of the island and the views as you go up the hill are spectacular.
The one hour takes you through the tunnels under Oliver Hill. It’s amazing to see and learn all about what was required to operate and maintain these guns during World War II. You won’t believe what there is beneath these hills and what went into keeping these guns ready for action if they were required – which they never were!
The guides are very knowledgeable and most are volunteers who have a ancestral connection with the island – so you get lots of stories about what the people of the time got up to as well!
We recommend this tour for kids 4 years +. There are a few stairs and narrow walkways so you cannot take prams along. The tour itself maybe of limited to interest to kids under this age. You can ride up to the hill and see the guns on top of the hill without doing the tour also which younger kids will enjoy.
