To experience the Swan Bell Tower families have a choice of two tours. The Swan Bell Tour Experience which includes an interactive bell chiming demonstration, tour of the bells and access to the upper deck to take in the views of the city. There is also a General Admission option available on arrival to view the bells and upper deck.
On our visit we enjoyed the Bell Tower Experience which included a detailed talk about the history of the bells and how they came to find their home at the Swan Bell Tower, an interactive bell ringing demonstration and question time.
Our amazing tour guide told us all about how the St Martin In The Field bells, thought to have orginated in the 14th Century, found their way to their most recent home at the Swan Bell Tower. We learned lots of interesting facts about the bells and the techniques required to ring the bells. The tour group, young and old, were all then given a turn to ring the bells. You can see the bell you are ringing moving from the live camera shown on the big screen located in the demonstration room. This is the only place in the world that you can enjoy an experience like this.
There was plenty of time for questions at the end, and it was great to see that the talk had provoked some excellent questions from the kids about the bells. Each of us received a Certificate to show that we had completed the bell chiming experience. The talk and bell ringing experience took about 30 mins.
We then took the lift upstairs to see the bells we had just been ringing and that could see on the big screen.
Lastly we went to check out the amazing views of the Swan, city and Elizabeth Quay from the top of the Bell Tower. There is a 360 degree platform around the top so it’s an amazing way to see the city from up high. There is a lift that takes you to all levels or you can use the stairs. It’s fully pram and disabled accessible. The Bell Tower Experience Tour took around an hour in total and is a highly recommended fun and educational thing to do while you are in the city.
It’s recommended that the Bell Tower Experience Tour be booked online to avoid disappointment. These run every 30 mins between 10.30-2.30pm every Monday – Saturday (except for Monday and Thurs where chiming demonstrations take place between 12-1pm). General Ringing 12-1pm Sundays. For general admission to see the bells and the top of the tower, this can only be booked on arrival.
The Bell Tower Experience is $18 for adults and $9 for kids (5-14yrs, under 5 free) and General Admission is $9 for adutls and $7 for kids (5-14yrs, under 5 free). Family passes are also available. T he school holidays is a fantastic opportunity to check out the Bell Tower or join in the Bell Tower Experience with up to 4 kids entering free* with each paid adult. See website below for details.
