Flying Fox * Scooter Track * Nature Based Play * Trampolines * Picnic Shelter * Water Fountain * BBQs
The Wembley Sports Park Playground is located in between the Matthews Netball Centre and the Wembley Sports Park Oval and Club Rooms. The playground relies on natural shading with the top part of the playground well shaded, but the rest however in open sun until the planted trees mature.
Opened in January 2017 the central and most popular feature is a dual cable flying fox that includes an all abilities seat on one side.
The other popular feature that is unique to this playground is the scooter track with a slight elevation on the corners that winds all the way through and around the playground. Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring the scooters, your kids will love zipping around this very cool track.
It’s great to see a couple of features that challenge the kids climbing abilities. This one above is a little bit like a more challenging set of monkey bars as they see if they can swing from circle to circle or even climb up on top. Grown ups – this is a good one for doing some pull ups if you are looking to do some activity while the kids play. There is also a climbing frame that has three different ways to climb up, and has a bell you can ring once you reach the top (pictured top), near the flying fox.
Trampolines are fast becoming a standard feature in our new playgrounds. Wembley Sports Park Playground has two, one large one (suitable for big kids or adults) surrounded by soft fall.
This seesaw with ramps either side is very popular with the kids, and seems to get the adults involved as kids gang up on the parents and try to stop them for pushing the up in the air. It’s not only fun but little do they know they are learning about the leverage, weights and the force of rotation at the same time as they figure out how to get the seesaw to tip more easily.
Around the park are a few individual play features including this little kids digger. It’s good to see a manual digger that is small enough for the average child to use. There is also a spinning chair, spinning deck, single mini swing (this is the only swing in the park) as well as some nature based play.
Mr 6 loved this igloo shaped cubby house / climbing dome – he played in here for a ages, but who doesn’t love a good cubby! The playground also features nature based play with stepping stone logs, soft fall domes and a section of balancing logs and rocks.
If you plan to stay a while, there is a picnic shelter and BBQs and you can find a water fountain (with dog bubbler) at the top of the playground near the flying fox, where there is also some deck style seating, under the large tree.
Wembley Sports Park Playground is located right next to a large sporting oval and club rooms, so you may get access to the toilets during a sporting event, otherwise toilets are not available at the park. There is also plenty of room to run around on the oval right next to the playground if you feel like kicking a footy or flying a kite.
Wembley Sports Park Playground is best enjoyed with a few friends, there aren’t many seating areas for large groups (unless you want to set up on the grassed area). There’s lots of play features to challenge the kids and give them a bit of adventure – with something for all ages. Just remember to bring along hats and to wear sunscreen as it will be a while before the trees grow and provide some shade. You’ll also find plenty of parking in the large car park alongside Selby Street.
