The Sea Lion Tour Cervantes with The Lobster Shack is an absolute must for the Perth family adventure list. Whether you book a tour as part of your stay in the Coral Coast or drive up for a day trip, this amazing up close wildlife encounter is a not to be missed experience and one the whole family will love.
Cervantes is located approximately 200km and 2hours drive North of Perth and is home to the infamous Sea Lion Tour. This tour leaves from The Lobster Shack located along the coast in the Cervantes township.
This one and half hour family friendly tour runs in the warmer months (~September to April) and takes you up close with the rare Australian Sea Lion.
The tour starts at The Lobster Shack in Cervantes, where you and your family can check in for the tour. Fron here it’s a short 2 minute bus ride out to the jetty to board the boat.
On board the boat, everyone is given a safety briefing, including some information about swimming safely with the seals and then it’s a cruisy 10 minute ride over to the island.
The Lobster Shack “Seal of Approval” boat is quite big, so it makes for a very comfortable and relatively dry trip over to the island. You can walk around the boat, including going up to the front, to check out the views of the magnificent coastline.
The Cervantes Islands Nature Reserve is located not far off the coastline and the depth all the way out to, and around the island is only 2-3 metres. This makes this tour perfect for young families as floatation vests and pool noodles are provided to assist with floating.. In some sections you can stand in the water, which all makes it a little easier to assist young children in the water.
Between the staff on the boat and the Lifeguard in the water, The Lobster Shack crew ensure that each and every person has a memorable experience. All snorkeling gear is provided and they help you put your gear on if you need and help you with getting safely in and out of the water.
You are given an hour to snorkel and swim with the seals. The Lifeguard makes a call that draws the seals off the island and within minutes they are swimming around you. One tip! Don’t be in a rush to get in the water. At the end of the hour, many of the tour participants were back in the boat and the seals were in full play mode towards the end. Also bring a wet suit if you have one, particularly if you are swimming towards the beginning or end of the season when the water is a little cooler.
Back on board after the tour, water and biscuits are provided. You can also use the toilet and have a warm shower on board.
I highly recommend the Sea Lion Tour Cervantes with The Lobster Shack. My 12yo was a little hesitant to swim at first, but with all the support provided by the team, he jumped in the water and had an amazing up close experience he will never forget. All ages are welcome on the tour. Kids 3 and under can join the tour for free and all kids on board also get a free ice-cream afterwards at The Lobster Shack . Oh and a few days after the tour The Lobster Shack send you a link to some photos and videos taken on your tour – all included in the already very reasonable tour price.
